Sant'Antonino di Susa

Sant'Antonino di Susa is located right in the center of the valley; already in the town and surroundings we have some interesting proposals for those who visit us. You may start your visit from the central church of the town, which was enlarged in 1698 and maintains the original aspect of the Romanesque bell tower, declared a national monument. A little upstream in the Cresto hamlet, along the mule track that leads to Col Bione, you can see an interesting engraved boulder, the pera 'd le masche (witches' rock): 120 prehistoric cup-shaped engravings can be distinguished on the uniform lithic surface .

A journey between history and culture towards Turin

In the neighboring village of Vaie there is an interesting archaeological itinerary with its museum of experimental archeology, and the sanctuary of San Pancrazio, dating back to the 11th century

Traveling 2.5 miles towards Turin you'll see Mount Pirchiriano with the very famous Sacra di San Michele on top, a symbolic monument of Piedmont, founded around the year 1000

In the town of Rosta you'll find the preceptory of Sant'Antonio di Ranverso, dating back to 1121; the frescoes in the presbytery attributed to Giacomo Jaqueiro are famous

Finally, before reaching the city of Turin , we recommend visiting the Castello di Rivoli , dating back to 1280. Today it is the worthy seat of the prestigious Museum of Contemporary Art.

A look towards the upper valley

In Susa you can visit the Arch of Augustus, the Roman ruins and arena, the Savoy gate and the remains of the Grazian baths, the cathedral of San Giusto and the museum

In the in the homonymous town you'll find the fort of Exilles of which we have news as early as 1155; in the seventeenth century it was transformed into a modern fortress, which became the prison of the famous and mysterious character hidden by the Iron Mask

Upstream of Exilles, is Colle dell'Assietta (2472 m) where on 19 July 1747 the famous battle was fought which saw the victory of the Austro-Piedmontese against the French invaders headed for Turin

Going further, the Bramafam Fort is worthy of note, built on the homonymous ridge on the eastern edge of the Bardonecchia basin , which by extension and armament can be considered the largest nineteenth-century fortification built on the Cottian Alps.

Historical reenactments

In the summer the historical re-enactments are absolutely to be seen, in particular the historical palio at the court of the Red Count of Avigliana, which takes place in June, and the historic Tournament of the Hamlets of Susa, which takes place in July.

Natural attractions

For those who love walking at high altitude, the various alpine refuges and lakes of the Olympic mountains are a beauty not to be missed. The numerous mountain villages and the bike paths passing through the entire valley are ideal for those who want to see the valley by bicycle or mountain bike. The natural parks of Orsiera Rocciavrè and Avigliana Lakes are very important
